The full suite of MPA search locations now recommended for further assessment (subject to discussions at workshop 4) is presented on Figure 2 (detail of search locations shown in green are provided in the ‘profiles’ document produced for workshop 3).

Search location characteristics

Description

- The search location lies within a coarse sandy sediment plain to the east of Scotland south of the Fladen ground. It encompasses a shelf bank and mound feature known as Turbot Bank. Sandeel point records are present across the location. VMS data from 2006-2009 suggests that otter trawling, demersal seine netting and scallop dredging take place across the search location.

Size

- The search location is 273 km2.

Identification of Search Location

- The search location boundaries have been drawn predominantly around the bank feature to maximise the inclusion of sandeel point records and offshore subtidal sand and gravel habitat in the vicinity, as this location is being considered in its own right for sandeels. This search location was identified as an alternative option to that presented by the Firth of Forth Banks Complex on the basis that the same features are present, and thus they will be considered together at the workshop.

Existing management

- None.

Natura Area of Search

Shelf banks and mounds

The MPA search features that occur within the Turbot Bank search location are sandeels, shelf banks and mounds and offshore subtidal sands and gravels. Offshore subtidal sands and gravels are predicted to occur throughout the search location. The shelf banks and mound feature - Turbot Bank - is situated to the west and sandeel point records are present across the search location.

The MPA search location does not include any key geodiversity areas but does cross the edge of sediment wave fields which are a feature under the Marine Geomorphology of the Scottish Shelf Seabed Block.
